Star kids Janhvi Kapoor (late Sridevi’s daughter) and Ishaan Khattar (Shahid Kapoor’s half-brother) Dhadak released this Friday on July 20. Expectedly, Shashank Khaitan’s directorial is receiving mixed responses from critics as well as fans. Dhadak, an official adaptation of Nagraj Manjule’s Marathi sleeper-hit Sairat has failed to create a similar magic. Despite the criticisms pouring in hard and fast, the film has managed to get off to a good start at the box office. Dhadak first day box office collection is Rs 8.71 crores. Now, with these box-office figures would make the film producer, Karan Johar reasonably happy considering the film featured newcomers. With Dhadak, Janhvi has also beaten the opening day collections of her cousins Sonam and Harshvardhan, and step-brother Arjun Kapoor’s debut movies! We’re sure everybody would only be happy about Janhvi holding this box office record.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to reveal how much Dhadak minted on its first day of the release. He writes, “#Dhadak takes a HEROIC START... Rarely does a film starring absolute newcomers open so well... Day 1 is higher than #StudentOfTheYear [₹ 8 cr]… Fri ₹ 8.71 cr. India biz.” It is quite an achievement for Janhvi, Ishaan, Shashank and entire Dhadak team to see fans flocking to theatres for their movie. Here’s a look at how Janhvi surpassed other actors of this generation from Kapoor clan and how.

1. Sonam Kapoor in Saawariya (2007)

Evergreen actor, Anil Kapoor’s eldest daughter Sonam, made a dream debut opposite another star kid, Ranbir Kapoor, son of actor couple Rishi and Neetu Kapoor in 2007 with Saawariya. It was helmed by renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. In fact, Saawariya was Bhansali’s most ambitious, larger-than-life project. However, it turned out to be big disaster, both critically and commercially. Saawariya’s first-day opening collection was Rs 3 crores. Made on a budget of Rs 45 crores, it could only manage a lifetime business of Rs 39 crores.

2. Arjun Kapoor in Ishaqzaade (2012)

In 2012, Yash Raj Films’ Ishaqzaade turned out to be Bollywood debut of two more celebrity kids – Arjun Kapoor, son of producer Boney Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra, sister of actress Priyanka Chopra. It was also a film about two star-crossed lovers, and it received much love from critics and audiences. Both Arjun and Pari’s performance along with Habib Faisal’s direction got big thumbs up, and the film got off to a good opening day collection of Rs 4.49 crores. Its lifetime collection in India was Rs 47 crores, and worldwide gross was Rs 63 crores.

3. Harshvardhan Kapoor in Mirzya (2016)

Sonam’s kid brother Harshvardhan Kapoor followed his sister’s footsteps to become an actor. Just like Sonam got a perfect launchpad with SLB’s magnum opus Saawariya, young Harsh got an opportunity to be the lead of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s grand film Mirzya. The 2016 film also featured Saiyami Kher as the heroine, and yes, she too has a filmy background. Mirzya was panned by critics and found no takers in the audiences as well. Made on a lavish budget of Rs 45 crores, it earned Rs 1.5 crores on its first day and a meagre Rs 10 crores as lifetime collection.

So, that was Janhvi Kapoor dazzling past her loving cousins and brother in the movie business. Dhadak is expected to record around Rs 20 crores in the opening week, and the makers would hope for positive word of mouth to sustain their growth. It has also started on a good note at the international box office, earning more than three crores. Now, Janhvi would hope the film turns out to be a profitable venture for the producers, and she gets the ‘hit’ tag against her debut movie.
