YouTube New View Count Rule: View Count To Start When Video Begins Playing From August 24, Users Raise Bot Farm Concerns
YouTube will change its public view-counting system from August 24, counting a view as soon as a video begins playing from its first frame. While the platform says the move will give creators clearer exposure data and will not affect monetisation, some users have raised concerns that the new system could make videos more vulnerable to view bot farms.
ouTube is changing how it counts public views from August 24, with every video view set to be recorded as soon as playback begins from the first frame. The platform says the change will bring consistency across video formats and creators will likely see their total view counts increase faster. However, some users have raised concerns over the potential for view bot farms to exploit the system.
The new standard will apply globally to all YouTube video formats, bringing regular videos in line with the approach already used for Shorts. YouTube said the change is intended to eliminate confusion caused by different view-counting systems and provide creators with a clearer picture of their reach. YouTube New View Count Rule From August 24
Starting 8/24, views will count the moment a video begins to play (w/ no minimum watch time) across all formats (VOD, Shorts, & Live). We’re standardizing views to reflect creators’ true exposure across YouTube, making it easier to show their value to brand partners.

YouTube To Count View From First Frame
In its announcement, YouTube said that from August 24, 2026, "a view will be counted the moment a video begins to play, from the very first frame." The platform said the updated system will apply across all formats worldwide. It previously used different methods to measure views depending on the type of content.
"Last year, we updated how we count public views for Shorts to better capture how viewers watch on YouTube. Now, we’re aligning all other video formats to this same standard for consistency across the platform." YouTube said creators had asked for greater clarity around the different metrics used across its formats. YouTube Shorts Experience Updated; Check Details.
"However, we’ve heard that creators want to eliminate this metric confusion and accurately understand their true exposure, which is why we’re making this update!"
YouTube Expects Faster View Count Growth
The change could result in higher or faster-growing publicly displayed view counts because a view will be registered at the start of playback. YouTube said that "creators will likely see their total view counts increase faster moving forward."
The platform said having the same metric across formats should make it easier for creators to understand their overall exposure and communicate their reach to brand partners and sponsors.
Engaged Views Will Remain In Analytics
The existing metric will continue to be available to creators through YouTube Analytics. YouTube said the original view metric will be called "Engaged views" and will remain accessible in Analytics under Advanced Mode. It will show how many viewers chose to continue watching a video. This means the public-facing view count and the engaged-view metric will serve different purposes after the August 24 change.
No Change To Monetisation Or YPP Eligibility
YouTube said the new public view-counting system will not change creator earnings or eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Creator earnings will continue to be based on "Engaged Shorts views" and "Engaged Watch Hours", which creators can access through YouTube Analytics > Advanced Mode.
There will also be no change to YPP eligibility. YouTube said the terminology for its entry requirements will be updated, with "qualified Shorts views" and "qualified watch hours" replacing the earlier terms "valid public Shorts views" and "valid public watch hours."

Then i hope you have a handle on bot farms consistently refreshing a video after it gets the view count.
This seems risky..

Users Raise View Bot Farm Concerns
While YouTube says the change is intended to improve consistency and transparency, some users have questioned whether counting views from the first frame could make the system easier to manipulate. One user wrote, "Then i hope you have a handle on bot farms consistently refreshing a video after it gets the view count. This seems risky.."
Another user raised a similar concern, asking, "Wouldn't this be a treasure for view bot farms ???" The comments reflect concerns that automated systems repeatedly loading or refreshing videos could potentially generate more counted views under the new system. YouTube's announcement does not indicate that the change will alter its existing systems for detecting invalid or artificial traffic.
From August 24, the updated view metric will appear wherever views are displayed on YouTube. YouTube said the goal is to provide "metric parity across all formats" and help creators better understand their overall exposure. The platform has also directed creators to its Help Center for additional information about the new views metric.
