If you are not aware of this, August 29 is celebrated as National Sports Day, to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. We use the occasion to pay tribute to the sports champions of our country, be it in any field. While the government has launched a 'Fit India' campaign on this day to spread health awareness, we really hope that they would also encourage more participation for sports in the country by having better perks, better training facilities and better awareness for anything that isn't cricket. Don't we all want to see the higher tally of medals at the Olympics and showing the world 'Har Jeet Cheen Le Haar Se India Waale'! National Sports Day 2019: From PV Sindhu’s BWF World Championships Win to 2011 Cricket World Cup Victory, Here’s A List of India’s Biggest Sporting Achievements in the Last Decade

With that mention of a song from the movie Happy New Year, let's talk about Bollywood and sports. Now Bollywood has given us some truly good sports movies in Lagaan, Chak De India, Iqbal, Hip Hip Hurray. Then there are some underrated films like Striker, Say Salaam India, et al. And there are some really bad ones too that make us wonder, has none of the directors ever watched a sport, let play it.

In this special feature, we look at the five most ridiculous sports scenes in Bollywood films. You can add your own choices in the comments section below.

Haseena Maan Jayegi

Sport: Whatever Karishma Kapoor is trying to play here

Okay, this viral scene from the David Dhawan film revels in Bollywood absurdity. We have Karishma Kapoor and her friends play basketball like rugby with a football, while wearing tennis dresses that too on a golf course! Seriously, has no one in the film unit had ever played any kind of sports to realise there is everything wrong with this scene?

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo

Sport: Football

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo may have been a huge hit but many of the film's scenes are absurd even by Salman Khan standards. Like this impromptu football match that has people running helter-skelter instead of playing whatever they are playing that will make Pele roll in his grave!

Awwal Number

Sport: Cricket

Lagaan is Aamir Khan's apology for screwing up cricket in this film. Dev Anand, God Bless His Soul, made one of the absurdly ridiculous films in his career, where the climax has Aamir Khan's Indian team chase 275 runs against Australian team (who are mostly Indians with less fairer skin than Aamir), while Aditya Pancholi is trying to bomb the game. Literally. Of course, Aamir wins the match with a century, and the commentators insist that the rest of the team-mates end up making ducks. So we wonder who made the remaining 170 odd runs. Also, watch out for the reactions from the spectators that range from ludicrous to orgasmic!

Student of the Year 2

Sport: Kabaddi

Look, Kabaddi is not mixed martial arts. Or parkour. Or freestyle wrestling. But then this is a movie about 30 year something acting like brattish teenagers, so we will pass!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Sport: Basketball

As much we love Rahul and Anjali, what's happening on that basketball court is not basketball. It is a fresh complaint to the Human Resource Department for sexual harassment. And seriously, how is this a fair match when the female has to play wearing a sari against a guy in normal clothes?
