Actor Anupama Parameswaran has publicly opened up about the emotional toll of a past controlling relationship, revealing that the experience made her feel ashamed of being a woman and ultimately changed her perspective on motherhood. Speaking in an interview on host Dhanya Varma's YouTube channel, the actor shared details about the narcissistic behaviour and period-shaming she faced from an unnamed ex-boyfriend, which led her to abandon her long-held dream of having children. Anupama Parameswaran Opens Up About Two Years of ‘Narcissistic Abuse’ After Breakup, Compares Ex-Boyfriend to ‘Anniyan’ (Watch Video).

Anupama Parameswaran Says She Was Shamed for Being a Woman

During the candid conversation, Parameswaran detailed how the two-year relationship stripped away her self-esteem, making her feel self-conscious about her career, confidence, and basic biology. "I was in a situation where I was ashamed that I was an actor. I was ashamed that I was confident. I was ashamed that I have my periods and I'm a woman," she stated.

She described a pattern where her natural body processes were routinely used as a tool to dismiss her feelings whenever she brought up legitimate concerns.

Period-Shaming Revelations and Impact on Dreams of Motherhood

Elaborating on the continuous cycle of emotional manipulation, Parameswaran explained how her former partner deflected responsibility during arguments by attributing her reactions to her menstrual cycle.

"First day of the cycle, fifth day of the cycle, tenth day of the cycle, fifteenth day of the cycle, twentieth day, twenty-fifth day, any day of the cycle. You confront this person for a mistake he has done, they will say, 'Oh, you're PMSing, your period is yet to come,'" she recalled.

The relentless shaming caused a deep shift in how she viewed her future. Parameswaran shared that while she once envisioned having a large family, the trauma from the relationship erased those hopes entirely.

"So I was so ashamed," she said. "I was someone who dreamt of having 11 children. At this point, I don't even want kids. I felt so bad for being a woman. I felt so bad for all my achievements".

Controlling Behaviour and Professional Fallout

The period-shaming was part of a broader, restrictive dynamic that affected both her personal choices and her professional life. Parameswaran revealed that her former partner gradually attempted to control various aspects of her identity, including the way she dressed and her career decisions.

She noted that the toxic environment led her to skip promotional events for her film Dragon and recalled breaking down during the promotional campaign for Paradha after experiencing slut-shaming. Furthermore, she mentioned facing constant pressure to get engaged and married, which she delayed by trusting her instincts. Dhruv Vikram Breaks Silence Over Personal Life Scrutiny Amid Alleged Ex-Girlfriend Anupama Parameswaran’s Revelations (Watch Video).
