Renowned Tamil filmmaker and actor Sundar C. has officially entered the political arena, having been nominated to contest the Madurai Central Assembly constituency in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. The announcement was made on Saturday, March 28, 2026, by A.C. Shanmugam, the founder and president of the Puthiya Needhi Katchi (New Justice Party).
Sundar C To Contest on AIADMK Symbol in NDA Alliance
Although Sundar C. is representing the Puthiya Needhi Katchi, he will contest as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) using the AIADMK’s iconic "Two Leaves" symbol. This strategic move follows a seat-sharing agreement within the AIADMK-led NDA, which includes the BJP and PMK. The New Justice Party has been allocated two seats within the alliance: one to be contested on the AIADMK’s symbol and another on the BJP’s "Lotus" symbol. While Sundar C.’s candidacy for Madurai Central is confirmed, the second constituency and candidate are expected to be announced on Monday, March 30.
Sundar C To Face PTR in Madurai Central Battle
Sundar C., identified in official statements as the "son of Chidambaram Pillai," is set to face a formidable opponent in Madurai Central. He is likely to be pitted against the incumbent MLA and DMK heavyweight, Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (PTR), who currently serves as the Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services. Sundar C’s foray into politics follows a 30-year career in the film industry, during which he directed blockbusters like Arunachalam and Anbe Sivam. His wife, actor Khushbu Sundar, is a veteran politician and currently serves as a Vice-President of the Tamil Nadu BJP.
Sundar C Enters Tamil Nadu Poll Race
The director’s connection to Madurai was highlighted last month when he participated in the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a 140-foot statue of freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai in the city. During the event, Sundar C. shared that his father was named Chidambaram in honour of the legendary leader, signalling a deep-rooted personal tie to the region he now seeks to represent. With the Tamil Nadu elections scheduled for April 23, 2026, Sundar C.’s candidacy adds another high-profile name to a race already featuring cinematic figures like Vijay and his recently formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
