The proceedings came to a formal conclusion on Friday when Sangeetha submitted a withdrawal application through her counsel. During a 15-minute interaction via video conferencing, the judge recorded her statement confirming that she no longer wished to pursue the dissolution of her marriage.  Vijay’s legal representative raised no objection to the withdrawal request.

Consequently, the court accepted the plea and closed the matter, providing brief closure to a legal dispute that had attracted significant public and media attention in recent months.  Sangeetha had originally filed the divorce petition in February under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, citing mental cruelty, adultery, and desertion. The case had drawn widespread attention, coinciding with Vijay's political campaign and subsequent assumption of office as Chief Minister.

Vijay and Sangeetha’s story began in the late 1990s. Sangeetha Sornalingam, a Sri Lankan Tamil resident based in the UK, visited Chennai during a film shoot to meet Vijay after admiring his performance in the 1996 hit film Poove Unakkaga.  What started as a fan-actor interaction developed into a friendship and later a relationship with the approval of Vijay's parents, filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar and singer Shobha.

The couple registered their marriage in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998, followed by a formal wedding ceremony in Chennai on August 25, 1999. They have two children together, Jason Sanjay and Divya Saasha.

For over two decades, Sangeetha maintained a low profile, rarely making public statements while supporting Vijay’s rise to top stardom in Tamil cinema and his transition into full-time politics with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.  Separation rumours surfaced in recent years as Sangeetha ceased accompanying Vijay to public gatherings and film events, though neither party publicly commented on the private matter until court filings emerged.

Legal Dispute and Allegations

In her petition filed in February, Sangeetha alleged that the marital rift began around 2021. She claimed to have suffered emotional distress, citing unfulfilled assurances and growing distance within the marriage.  The court petition detailed efforts at reconciliation between August 2024 and late 2025.
