An estimated 1.5 million American workers are projected to take the day off work or call in sick on the release day of Grand Theft Auto VI, leading to nearly $1 billion in lost U.S. economic output. According to calculations by José García Montalvo, a professor of economics at Pompeu Fabra University, the widespread absenteeism will cause a brief, noticeable shock to nationwide productivity. The highly anticipated video game release is shaping up to be as much of a workplace disruption as a cultural milestone.
Mass Absenteeism Threatens Workplace Output
Montalvo’s analysis indicates that the expected drop in labor output could hit short-term productivity by approximately 2% on launch day. The demographic driving the bulk of these absences comprises young adults, predominantly men aged 18 to 30. GTA 6 PC Release Could Be Sooner? Here's What We Know.
Industries with high proportions of remote and tech-focused positions are expected to feel the greatest impact. Because remote work setups make unscheduled absences easier to manage, employers in software, IT, and related sectors face elevated risks of reduced staffing and delayed project schedules.
Businesses Prepare for Staffing Shortages
Some companies are already taking public steps to manage customer expectations. California-based automotive parts distributor Burger Motorsports recently issued a statement advising customers that shipping times, customer support, and general fulfillment operations would slow significantly around the game's November 19 launch window due to pre-approved employee leave.
The phenomenon is not entirely unprecedented, though the scale of GTA 6 sets a new benchmark. Historical estimates from prior major media events, including the launch of Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, similarly recorded noticeable localized dips in attendance across corporate offices and educational institutions. A Billion-Dollar Loss Meets a Billion-Dollar Gain
Ironically, the $1 billion estimated hit to U.S. GDP mirrors the financial targets set by the game's publisher, Take-Two Interactive. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously noted expectations that launch-window sales and initial operations would generate roughly $1 billion in direct cash flow. Total first-week retail bookings for the game are projected by industry analysts to reach as high as $4.5 billion globally.
While U.S. workplaces absorb the temporary loss in output, the economic rewards will flow internationally. The game's lead development studio, Rockstar North, is based in Edinburgh, Scotland—meaning much of the economic value generated by the title will ultimately settle within the U.K. technology and creative tax sectors.
