New Delhi, Sep 25: Indian Army's Lance Naik Sandeep Singh was martyred during an anti-infiltration operation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. It is learnt that Sandeep Singh was a part of the team that carried out surgical strikes on terror launch pads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in 2016.

Nearly ten days after militants attacked the Army base camp in Uri that left 18 jawans dead on September 18, 2016, armed forces conducted surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) in PoK and destroyed terrorist launch pads and killed many terrorists. The then DGMO, Lt General Ranbir Singh, had said the surgical strikes inflicted “significant casualties” on terrorists.

"General Bipin Rawat #COAS & all ranks salute supreme sacrifice of Lance Naik Sandeep Singh & offer condolences to the family of the Braveheart (sic)," the Indian Army tweeted. The martyred jawan is survived by his wife and a 5-year-old son. The gunfight started on Sunday after a group of heavily armed militants was challenged by the Army near the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector. While the Army gunned down five intruders, it lost Singh in operation.
