Daati Maharaj Rape Case: Probe Transferred to Delhi Police Crime Branch

New Delhi, June 12: The investigation into the rape case against self-styled godman Daati Maharaj was transferred to the Delhi Police crime branch on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has also sought police protection for the woman who was allegedly raped by Daati Maharaj. DCW chief Swati Maliwal wrote a letter to the SHO of Fatehpur Beri police station, requesting him to look into the matter and provide immediate protection to the victim.

Daati Maharaj was on Monday booked for allegedly raping his disciple two years ago. The woman disciple has alleged that she was raped by Daati Maharaj inside the Shani Dham two years ago. A case has been registered under Sections 376, 377, 354 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Daati Maharaj heads the Shani Dham in Fatehpur Beri in Delhi. He is a popular face on Indian television as he anchors horoscope based shows on several news channels. He is also popular in political circles with several politicians seen with him.

The woman said that she didn't file a police complaint earlier due to fear and social stigma. She said that she was intimidated by the huge following of the Shani Dham head. According to reports, he has been accused of sexual assault in the past too.
