Activist Sharjeel Imam has been granted interim bail from October 4 to October 10 to attend his cousin’s wedding, his brother Muzammil Imam announced on Monday. Imam has remained in judicial custody in connection with FIR 59 of 2020, which alleges a larger conspiracy behind the communal violence in North East Delhi under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Confirming the temporary relief on social media, Muzammil wrote on X: “Interim bail has been granted to my brother Sharjeel Imam for attending our cousin’s marriage from 4th to 10th October 2026.” The relief comes as the higher judiciary prepares to take up arguments on his substantive, regular bail plea later this month. Delhi HC to Hear Bail Plea on September 30
The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear Imam’s regular bail plea alongside that of former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar Umar Khalid on September 30.
The hearing was adjourned on September 21 after the prosecution sought additional time, citing the indisposition of Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, who is representing the State. A division bench comprising Justice Prathiba M Singh and Justice Dinesh Bhatt subsequently listed the matter for September 30. Both Imam and Khalid have challenged a July 4 trial court order rejecting their regular bail applications. In that ruling, the trial court had relied upon the Supreme Court’s January 5 order, which had denied bail to the two accused in the larger conspiracy case.
The upcoming six-day relief is not the first instance where Imam has received interim bail to attend family commitments. In March, a Delhi court granted him 10 days of interim bail to attend his brother’s wedding and care for his ailing mother.
The overarching case stems from the widespread communal clashes that broke out in North East Delhi in February 2020, in which 53 people lost their lives and more than 700 were injured during protests and counter-protests surrounding the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
The Delhi Police Special Cell is investigating FIR 59 of 2020, registered under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code and stringent anti-terror clauses of the UAPA. Imam, Khalid, and several other co-accused have consistently denied all allegations of orchestrating violence or inciting unrest, with the High Court bench set to review the merits of their bail appeals next week.
