The University of Mumbai has reduced its rankings in overall development. Over the recent years, the institute is striving to get itself a top rank position in the global and national rankings. Now those who have enrolled into the distance education programme offered by the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) have been sent in a heave as the distance programme offered by Mumbai University is no longer recognised by the University of Grants Commission (UGC). Hence, without UGC’s approval, their degrees will not be valid. The reason for such fallout is the university’s lack of a grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Mumbai University Major Blooper Exposed! MU ‘Wrongly’ Failed 35,000 Students in 2017 Exam.

According to media outlets, the Distance Education Bureau, UGC released the list of approved Distance Education Institutes and their corresponding courses for the academic year 2018-19 on October 3. The time, when the list was published, several open universities and distance education departments were done with their admission process. But little, did they know that things would turn in such an unpleasant manner. Mumbai Mirror reported that the University of Mumbai had completed the admission process to the distance education courses on October 30. It is not just IDOL, but Mumbai University has lost its UGC recognition.

Mumbai University’s move to continue with their admission process arises question. Knowing that they have been de-recognised, the university continued with their future batches’ admissions. Every year, on an average IDOL, sees about 65,000 admissions and readmissions. It is a significant blow to the students around. Out of 118 Open Schools and Universities, there are only 75 universities recognised by the UGC in the list of 2018.
