Kolkata, September 17: A huge fire broke out at Kolkata's Bagri market on Canning Street on Sunday. The firefighting operation is still on as the fire continues to rage in some parts of the building. Deputy Fire Director as spoken to ANI said, "We've reached from ground to top floor & have succeeded in containing the fire but due to the presence of chemical there, it's difficult to contain pockets of fire inside. Now 35 fire tenders & 250 firemen are here and operation is going on continuously."

As per reports, more than 100 shops have been gutted, no casualty has been reported till now. According to an Indian Express report, one firefighter has been injured while trying to arrest the fire and is admitted to Calcutta Medical College. The building that caught fire, housed over 400 shops including that of medicines, chemicals and plastic goods. The market building located at 71 Canning Street is part of Burrabazar wholesale hub. The building was initially a three-storeyed and later two more floors were added to it.

A fire reportedly started in the odd hours of Sunday on the first floor of the five-storied building and quickly spread to the floors ahead. The entire area was covered with thick black smoke.
