Navi Mumbai, July 27: A protester, who was injured during clashes between protestors and police in Navi Mumbai, succumbed at JJ Hospital on Thursday. The victim, identified as 25-year-old Rohan Todkar, was initially admitted to NMMC hospital at 11:30pm on Wednesday. He had sustained multiple injuries on his head, hands and legs during the violence at Kopar Khairane.

“A social worker told the casualty medical officer he was informed by the police about a man lying injured on the road in Sector 19. So he went there in his ambulance and brought the injured man to hospital. The patient had grievous head injuries. Doctors immediately gave primary treatment to the patient. But as his condition was critical, we referred him to JJ.

Later, it was learnt he died during treatment at JJ.” Dr Prashant Jawade, medical superintendent of Vashi’s NMMC hospital told a newspaper. Around 20 policemen, including eight officers, were injured in stone-pelting by protesters at Kopar Khairane and Kalamboli on Wednesday during the bandh called by Maratha outfits for quota in government jobs and education.

Nine persons were injured when police caned protesters and fired pellets and rubber bullets on the violent mob, police had said. Police had fired 40 shotgun rounds, 22 rubber bullets, 42 teargas shells and 11 teargas grenades to disperse the violent mob in Navi Mumbai, an official had said. Internet services were suspended in Navi Mumbai as a precautionary measure yesterday.

Marathas, a politically influential community that constitutes around 30 per cent of the state's population, have been demanding 16 per cent reservation. The community had earlier taken out silent marches across the state to highlight their demands, prominent among them being that of reservation. The agitation, however, turned violent after a 27-year-old protester jumped to his death in Godavari river near Aurangabad on July 23. (With PTI inputs)
