Air India has reduced flights on its major Canada routes due to soaring jet fuel prices and rising operational costs, affecting travellers flying between India and Canada. The airline confirmed schedule cuts on its Delhi-Toronto and Delhi-Vancouver services for May, with additional reductions planned in the coming months.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said in an internal message that the cuts were necessary because international operations had become less profitable amid a massive spike in jet fuel prices, longer flight paths and airspace restrictions.

The airline also noted that higher airfares and fuel surcharges have impacted passenger demand. Despite fare hikes, the carrier said there is a limit to how much ticket prices can be increased before travellers postpone or cancel trips. Air India Layoffs: No Job Cuts Planned but Salary Increments Deferred by a Quarter Amid Rising Costs.

Data from aviation analytics company Cirium showed that round-trip Air India flights between Toronto and Delhi dropped to 31 in May compared to 48 flights in March, marking a 35% decline.

The reduced flight availability is expected to impact passengers planning travel between Canada and India during the busy summer season. Industry experts believe airfare prices may remain elevated if global fuel costs continue to stay high and geopolitical tensions keep disrupting international air routes.
