An Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others injured after a patrol team came under suspected militant fire near the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Tuesday morning, officials said. The incident took place around 6:30 am near Nampong Nallah, where the 21 Assam Rifles personnel were patrolling an area where border-fencing work is underway, according to a report.

Havildar Jankhokai Kuki Killed

The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old Havildar Jankhokai Kuki. Four other personnel sustained injuries in the firing and were being evacuated for medical treatment. Details about their condition were not immediately available. Manipur: Assam Rifles Distributes Sewing Machines to 22 Women Under Civic Action Programme.

The Assam Rifles paid tribute to Kuki and described his death as a sacrifice in the line of duty. Security forces have intensified operations in the area following the attack.

Attack Near Border-Fencing Site

According to preliminary information, the patrol was operating near a section of the India-Myanmar border where fencing work is in progress when suspected militants opened fire. Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu confirmed receiving information about the incident and directed the officer-in-charge of Changlang police station to gather details. An official Assam Rifles account identifying the attackers was awaited in the initial reports. Manipur Violence: Normal Life Disrupted in Five Valley Districts Due to 48-Hour Shutdown Called for Release of ‘Village Protection Volunteers’.

NSCN (K-YA) Role Not Confirmed

Preliminary reports have suggested that cadres of the NSCN (K-YA), or Yung Aung faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), may have been involved. However, authorities have not officially confirmed the identity of the attackers. The possible involvement of the group therefore remains an investigative lead rather than an established fact.

Security Operations Intensified

Security forces have launched operations in and around the area to locate those responsible for the firing and secure the border region. Investigators are also working to establish the circumstances in which the patrol came under attack.

The incident occurred in a part of Arunachal Pradesh that has historically faced security challenges linked to insurgent activity along the India-Myanmar frontier. Changlang shares a border with Myanmar, making the area strategically sensitive.

Recent Security Concerns Along Border

The attack comes two days after two construction workers were reportedly kidnapped at gunpoint from a school construction site in neighbouring Tirap district near the India-Myanmar border. Police were investigating that incident and the alleged attackers had not been identified.

The latest attack also occurred amid ongoing efforts to strengthen security and fencing along the India-Myanmar border. For now, security agencies are focused on identifying the attackers and determining the full circumstances surrounding Tuesday morning’s firing.
