A 12-year-old boy carrying holy water as part of a Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage died on Sunday night after falling from a moving tractor-trolley and being crushed under its wheels in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, local police confirmed. The victim was traveling alongside a group of pilgrims (Kanwariyas) who were carrying Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges River) toward Pilibhit district when the incident occurred.

According to officials, the boy reportedly lost his balance while the vehicle was in motion and slipped off the edge of the trolley. Before anyone on board could react or alert the driver, the child fell directly into the path of the tractor-trolley’s rear wheels, suffering catastrophic injuries that led to his immediate death at the scene. Punjab: 3 Kanwariyas Killed, One Injured in Sirhind Road Accident.

Local police rushed to the site shortly after being notified by members of the pilgrimage procession. Following initial procedures and consultation with the family, officials stated that the boy’s relatives declined a formal post-mortem examination.

"Arrangements were made via ambulance to safely transport the child's mortal remains back to his native village in accordance with the family's wishes," a senior police officer said, adding that officers subsequently ensured the remaining pilgrimage group resumed their route safely under police supervision. The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over the local pilgrimage community. The annual Kanwar Yatra sees thousands of devotees traveling long distances on foot or in open, improvised vehicles across North India. The accident highlights ongoing concerns regarding transport safety and overcrowded vehicles during peak religious processions along major state highways.
