Beed: Woman Critical After Gloves and Napkins Left Inside Her After C-Section in Maharashtra
A 19-year-old woman is critical after her family alleged surgical gloves and paper napkins were left inside her abdomen following a C-section at Beed district hospital. Sandhya Suraj Gaikwad was later shifted to Pune’s Sassoon Hospital, where doctors reportedly removed the material during another surgery. A probe has been ordered.
A 19-year-old woman from Maharashtra’s Beed district is in critical condition after her family alleged that surgical gloves and paper napkins were left inside her abdomen following a Caesarean section at Beed district hospital. Sandhya Suraj Gaikwad underwent the procedure on August 1 and was discharged four days later, but developed severe abdominal pain after returning home. She was later shifted to Pune for treatment.
According to her family, doctors at a private hospital subsequently detected an “unknown object” inside her abdomen. Sandhya was taken to Pune, where doctors at Sassoon Hospital performed another surgery and, according to the family, removed surgical gloves and paper from her abdomen. Sandhya’s husband, Suraj Gaikwad, alleged that his wife’s condition was caused by negligence during the first surgery and demanded strict action against those responsible, Sakal reported. “My wife’s painful condition has happened only because of the doctors’ negligence. Strictest action should be taken against the doctors responsible,” Suraj said.
The family said Sandhya began experiencing health problems after the C-section. Her mother said the teenager had been vomiting after the operation and that she had informed a nurse at the Beed civil hospital. According to her mother, hospital staff indicated that Sandhya had been discharged, although she initially refused to take her daughter home. Treatment Continued After Condition Worsened
As Sandhya’s abdominal pain became severe, her family took her to a private hospital. The family said doctors there detected an object inside her abdomen and indicated that treatment could involve significant expenses. They then travelled to Pune in search of further medical care.
The family said another hospital did not admit Sandhya because of the seriousness of her condition. She was subsequently taken to Sassoon Hospital. Her mother said doctors there performed surgery and removed “hand gloves and paper” from her abdomen. Sandhya remains in serious condition and is continuing treatment at Sassoon Hospital.
Probe Ordered Into Beed Hospital Treatment
The allegations have prompted the Beed district administration to take cognisance of the case. A show-cause notice has been issued to the woman doctor concerned and other health workers in connection with the incident. An investigation is underway to establish how the alleged surgical material came to be found inside the patient.
Beed District Surgeon Dr Satishkumar Solanke said the matter was being investigated and that strict legal and administrative action would follow if anyone was found responsible.
What The Investigation Will Examine
The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding Sandhya’s C-section, her treatment before discharge and the subsequent discovery of the alleged material. Authorities will also have to establish whether the material found during the second surgery was left behind during the August 1 procedure and, if so, determine who was responsible.
At this stage, the allegations of medical negligence have not been established. The probe and any subsequent medical or legal findings will determine responsibility. The case has raised questions over surgical protocols and post-operative care at the Beed district hospital as Sandhya continues treatment in Pune.
