Storing s*xually explicit content on cloud storage platforms like Google Drive may feel private, but a recent arrest in Kanpur is a reminder that nothing uploaded to the cloud is truly hidden from the law. A man was arrested after Google's automated systems flagged suspected child s*xual abuse material (CSAM) on his account, leading police straight to his doorstep within days.

The case highlights how tech companies actively monitor cloud accounts for illegal content, and how quickly that information can reach law enforcement.

How Google Caught The Accused

The accused, arrested from Kanpur's Chaman Ganj area, allegedly secretly recorded s*xually explicit videos of his minor cousins and other girls from his neighbourhood, then uploaded and stored the files on his Google Drive account. He reportedly deleted the videos from his phone, believing that was enough to erase evidence, but the files remained in his cloud storage, where Google's automated safety systems detected them. How a Google Alert Led to Kanpur Man’s Arrest Over S*xually Explicit Videos of Minor Girls.

Google Alert Leads to Man’s Arrest for Recording Obscene Clips

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anjali Vishwakarma said the Cyber Crime Police Station received an alert through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) on July 6, regarding a serious offence involving women and children. Two cyber investigation teams were deployed to launch a confidential probe.

Digital Footprints Are Nearly Impossible To Escape

Police said Google shared several technical details that helped identify the suspect, including his email account, mobile phone IMEI number, IP address, and other digital identifiers. This information was enough for investigators to trace and arrest him within days of the alert being generated. Kanpur: Man Arrested for Recording and Storing S*xually Explicit Videos of Daughter, Sister on Google Drive.

The case underscores a critical point: deleting a file from a device does not mean it disappears from cloud backups, and cloud platforms routinely scan stored content against known databases of illegal material.

What Triggers An Alert

Police explained that platforms like Google Drive use automated safety systems and technical scanning tools to identify content that violates their policies. When uploaded files are flagged as suspected CSAM or other prohibited material, the platform can suspend the account instantly.

In accordance with legal requirements, Google can then share relevant account information, including email address, IP address, and device identifiers, with law enforcement agencies. In this case, that information came through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), which had generated four separate cyber tipline reports linked to the accused's account, along with three additional related complaints found during the probe.

The Legal Consequences Are Severe

Storing, sharing, or creating CSAM is a criminal offence under Indian law, prosecuted under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from S*xual Offences (POCSO) Act. The Kanpur accused now faces serious charges, and investigators are examining whether the videos were distributed further or uploaded to other platforms, which could add additional charges.

Beyond CSAM, cloud platforms also prohibit terrorist or violent extremist content and other categories of illegal material, all of which can trigger similar automated detection and reporting mechanisms.

The Bottom Line

Cloud storage is not a private vault. Automated detection systems, cross-platform data sharing agreements, and international child safety databases mean that illegal content uploaded to services like Google Drive can be flagged and reported almost immediately, often before the user is even aware their account has been compromised.

Anyone storing p*rnographic or s*xually explicit material involving minors, regardless of intent to share it, is committing a criminal offence and risks arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment.

Police have appealed to the public to report suspected cases of online child exploitation through the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or the government's cybercrime reporting portal.
