Patna, July 25: The flood situation in Bihar is likely to worsen  in the coming days as neighbouring Nepal is witnessing a heavy downpour since the last few days. Due to incessant rains in the neighbouring nation, the water from the overflowing rivers there may flow in to Bihar, triggering flood-like situations here. The death toll in Bihar flood jumped to 123 on Wednesday. The situation in the 12 affected districts of Bihar worsened due to heavy rainfall in the past two days. Among the affected districts, Sitamarhi is the worst-hit with 37 deaths. The department has put the total number of people affected by the floods at 81.57 lakh in 105 blocks of 12 districts. Bihar Floods: All Schools in Darbhanga District to Remain Closed Till Further Orders.

According to the state disaster management department, the death toll in Sitamarhi district rose to 37 from 27 while five more people died in Madhubani raising the death toll to 30 there. In Muzaffarpur the death toll rose from two to four, while in eight other districts, the death figures remained unchanged-  Araria (12), Sheohar and Darbhanga (10 each), Purnea (9), Kishanganj (5), Supaul (3), East Champaran (2) and Saharsa (1) while Katihar has reported no casualties yet. Bihar Floods: Death Toll Jumps to 106, IAF Deploys Helicopters in Darbhanga to Help Flood Affected Victims.

Lightning Kills 39 in Bihar, 12 in Jharkhand

At least 39 people have lost their lives after lightning struck Bihar while 12 were killed in Jharkhand. According to a report by PTI, in Bihar, Jamui accounted for the highest number of eight deaths followed by Aurangabad (seven), Bhagalpur, Banka and East Champaran (four each), Rohtas (three), Nawada, Nalanda and Katihar (two each) and Munger, Arwal and Gaya (one each), the state disaster management department said.

In total, nearly 51 people were killed and nine others injured in lightning strikes in Bihar and Jharkhand. Reports inform that altogether 39 people have died across a dozen districts of Bihar, while 12 others lost their lives in four districts of Jharkhand.  Reports inform that ex-gratia will be paid to the next of the kin of each deceased, in keeping with the state government’s policy, while proper treatment will be ensured for the injured, official sources said.

Bihar has been hit by the worst floods this year. Taking serious note of situation, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the airdropping of relief in the affected districts. In the view of the grim situation, the Chief Minister has directed the airdropping of relief, particularly food packets, in the affected districts. A total of 26 companies of the National Disaster Response Force, the State Disaster Response Force and the Seema Sashatra Bal have been deployed in the affected districts to carry out rescue operations.
