The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will launch a three-month special drive against unauthorised constructions in slum areas from October 1 to December 31, 2026, targeting structures measuring 14 feet or more in height. The civic body has identified 39,111 such structures across Mumbai and has asked residents to remove unauthorised portions voluntarily or face enforcement action.
The drive will cover Mumbai city and the eastern and western suburbs. According to BMC data, the civic area has 2,23,150 slum structures, of which 39,111 meet the 14-foot or more height threshold, Mid Day reported. BMC Identifies 39,111 Structures
Of the 39,111 structures identified by the civic body, 3,348 are in the city area, 4,536 are in the western suburbs and 31,227 are in the eastern suburbs. The BMC said eviction action has already been taken against 4,584 of these structures, while notices have been issued to another 611 The civic body has urged residents living in the remaining structures to remove the unauthorised constructions immediately on their own. It warned that strict action would otherwise be taken.
The special campaign will run from October 1 through December 31, 2026. The BMC said the action is being conducted under the directions of BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Prajakta Verma-Lavangare, and the leadership of Joint Commissioner (Vigilance) Devender Singh.
The civic administration has appealed to residents not to undertake unauthorised construction and to remove such structures voluntarily if they have already been built. The planned action comes alongside ongoing enforcement by BMC's administrative wards against unauthorised constructions across Brihanmumbai.
Between August 24 and September 15, 2026, eviction action was taken against 128 unauthorised constructions, according to the BMC. Action against another 140 unauthorised constructions has been planned, indicating that enforcement activity is already underway ahead of the three-month special campaign.
The administration has reiterated that citizens should not undertake unauthorised construction and has asked those who have already made such additions to remove them on their own.
Eastern Suburbs Account For Largest Share
The distribution of the 39,111 identified structures is uneven across Mumbai. The eastern suburbs account for 31,227 structures, substantially more than the 4,536 identified in the western suburbs and 3,348 in the city area. The figures cover the Brihanmumbai area, including Mumbai city and its suburbs.
The BMC's action comes as the civic administration continues its wider enforcement against unauthorised structures and encroachments across the city.
Focus On Slum Areas And Civic Conditions
The latest drive is also part of a broader focus on conditions in Mumbai's densely populated settlements. The civic body has recently been pursuing measures aimed at improving cleanliness and monitoring in slum areas, including a technology-driven scheme involving GPS-based monitoring and a QR-based complaint system.
Separately, the legal framework in Maharashtra provides authorities with powers to act against unauthorised or illegal dwelling structures in notified slum areas, subject to the applicable statutory process. Section 3Z-1 of the Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act deals with the power of the competent authority to demolish certain unauthorised or illegal dwelling structures.
For the October-December campaign, the BMC has made clear that residents with unauthorised constructions should remove them voluntarily, failing which the civic administration will proceed with enforcement action.
