For a first-time update, residents aged 18 and above can submit any valid proof-of-date-of-birth document recognized by UIDAI. For minors under 18, a formal Birth Certificate is mandatory, though Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in this age group may also submit an Indian Passport.

When a date of birth has already been verified once, further changes face tighter restrictions. If the original document used was a Birth Certificate, applicants must provide a corrected Birth Certificate sharing the same Birth Registration Number (BRN) and issued by the same registrar, accompanied by an affidavit. If the original document was not a Birth Certificate, adults aged 18 and above must submit a corrected version of that same document, provided it remains on UIDAI's accepted list, or alternatively provide a Birth Certificate with an affidavit.

Exceptional Circumstances and Operator Errors

Subsequent changes after the first update are strictly limited to exceptional cases. If the initial update relied on a non-birth certificate document, any later correction requires a formal Birth Certificate. If a Birth Certificate was used originally, a corrected certificate from the same issuing registrar and carrying the identical BRN is required. In cases where an enrollment operator incorrectly recorded a date of birth that contradicts the documents originally submitted, UIDAI permits corrections to match the initial valid paperwork.

If that original document is no longer accepted or available, a self-declaration may be permitted. If an update request - whether first-time or subsequent - reveals that an individual was actually older than the age declared during initial enrollment, the application can be rejected. Such discrepancies may trigger the deactivation of the Aadhaar number, particularly if an individual was over the age of five when enrolled in the below-five category, or over the age of 18 when registered as a minor.
