LPG Cylinder Booking From October 1: How Aadhaar Authentication Will Affect Subsidy

New Delhi, September 28: Domestic LPG consumers will need to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication from October 1, 2026, to continue booking subsidised refills at the regulated retail selling price (RSP), subject to applicable subsidy eligibility. However, consumers who have not completed Aadhaar authentication will not be denied LPG cylinders altogether.
Those who do not complete the authentication process will still be able to purchase LPG, but at the applicable market price and without the subsidy, subject to the conditions set by oil marketing companies (OMCs).
What Changes From October 1?
Consumers who have already completed biometric Aadhaar authentication can continue booking LPG refills as usual. Those who have not completed the process will need to authenticate their Aadhaar to access subsidised refills at the regulated price.
As of September 19, around 274.3 million active domestic LPG consumers, or 89.9% of the total, had completed biometric Aadhaar authentication, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Consumers who have already completed the process do not need to repeat it.

Will LPG Supply Stop Without Aadhaar Authentication?
No. Consumers who do not complete Aadhaar authentication will still be able to obtain LPG at the applicable market price, subject to OMC conditions and local availability.
Consumers who are unwilling or unable to complete the authentication can register their choice through the digital channels of their respective OMC, including websites, mobile apps, WhatsApp chatbots and IVRS. Why Is Aadhaar Authentication Required for LPG?
The government has said the exercise is aimed at ensuring that LPG subsidies reach genuine and eligible households. Aadhaar authentication can also help identify duplicate or ineligible connections and prevent subsidised domestic LPG cylinders from being diverted for commercial or industrial use.
OMCs have been conducting the nationwide authentication drive since October 2023. The deadline was extended several times before September 14 became the final deadline for the authentication drive.
How Can LPG Consumers Complete Aadhaar Authentication?
Consumers can complete biometric Aadhaar authentication through three main routes:
- At the time of delivery: The LPG delivery person can complete the process using the OMC's mobile application.
- At the distributor's showroom: Consumers can visit their LPG distributor and complete authentication.
- Through the OMC mobile app: Self-authentication is available through the respective OMC app.
Indane customers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas customers can use HelloBPCL and HP Gas customers can use HP PAY.
Consumers should use only official OMC channels and should not share Aadhaar OTPs or other sensitive information with unknown callers or agents.
How Much LPG Subsidy Is Available?
The financial benefit depends on the consumer's eligibility and the prevailing LPG pricing and subsidy structure. According to the government, domestic LPG is currently sold below its cost, with the implicit subsidy on a 14.2 kg cylinder around INR 210 in September 2026, compared with INR 721 in June.
The government has also provided compensation to public-sector OMCs to keep domestic LPG affordable.
What Should LPG Consumers Do?
Consumers who have already completed biometric Aadhaar authentication do not need to take any further action. Those who have not completed the process should authenticate their Aadhaar before their next subsidised refill booking.
The important point for consumers is that LPG supply will not automatically stop from October 1. However, those seeking to access the regulated retail price with applicable subsidy will need to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication.
