Chennai, May 3: Doctors at Sri Ramachandra Hospital in Chennai successfully removed an LED bulb from the lungs of a five-year-old boy through bronchoscopy. The incident occurred when the boy accidentally swallowed the bulb while playing with a toy car nearly a month ago. Upon admission to the hospital, the child presented with breathing difficulties and a refractory cough, prompting immediate medical intervention.

According to a report by the Times of India, upon admission to Sri Ramachandra Hospital's outpatient ward, the medical team, led by Dr R Madhu, head of paediatric surgery, conducted a thorough assessment of the child's condition. Scans revealed the foreign object in the lung passage, prompting immediate action to prevent further complications. Previous attempts to remove the bulb through bronchoscopy at another hospital had failed, leading doctors to recommend open chest surgery. Chennai: IT Worker Weighing 150Kg Develops Complications After Being Administered Anaesthesia Before Weight Loss Surgery, Dies.

However, the family opted for a second opinion at Sri Ramachandra Hospital, where the doctors were prepared to undertake the challenging procedure. The operation, led by Dr Madhu and his team, involved navigating a 5x2 cm LED bulb lodged in the child's lung passage, as reported by The Hindu. Careful manoeuvring was required to avoid breaking the bulb and causing further complications. With meticulous precision, the surgeons successfully extracted the bulb through bronchoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure. Chennai: Retired Cop Suffers Head Injuries, Dies at Hospital After Drunk Cab Driver Pushes Him During Argument in Selaiyur; Accused Arrested.

The successful removal of the bulb relieved the child from breathing difficulties and coughing. The procedure, which lasted nearly two hours, was conducted free of cost for the child under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Dr Madhu highlighted the collaborative efforts of the anaesthesia department, headed by Dr Aruna Parameswari, in ensuring the success of the procedure. The child was discharged from the hospital in stable condition, marking a triumphant outcome in the face of a potentially life-threatening situation.
