Chhattisgarh: Tribal Woman Carries 90-Year-Old Mother-in-Law To Bank on Her Back for 3 Km To Retrieve Stopped Pension; Video Surfaces
A viral video from Chhattisgarh shows a tribal woman in her late 50s carrying her 90-year-old mother-in-law on her back for three km to a bank. The elderly woman's monthly INR 500 pension had been halted for four months due to incomplete KYC updates. Bank staff rapidly processed the paperwork and released the pending INR 2,000.
A viral video showing a tribal woman in her late 50s carrying her 90-year-old mother-in-law on her back for nearly three kilometers to a bank has highlighted the challenges rural beneficiaries face with biometric and documentation updates. The journey took place in the Mainpat development block of Chhattisgarh's Surguja district after the elderly woman's monthly state pension of INR 500 was halted for four consecutive months due to incomplete Know Your Customer (KYC) formalities.
Suspended Pension Prompts Three-Kilometer Journey
The woman, identified as Sukhmaniya, is a resident of Jangalpara village in the remote Kunia area. Footage captured by a passerby on Friday, May 22, and widely shared on social media on Saturday, May 23, showed Sukhmaniya traveling on foot along a local road with her elderly relative on her shoulders to reach the Central Bank of India branch in Mainpat town. Sukhmaniya explained to the individual filming the encounter that a "Bank Mitra" (banking correspondent) had previously delivered the monthly pension directly to their home. However, because the mandatory KYC process had not been completed, the regular doorstep disbursements were automatically frozen by the banking system.
Administrative Response and Rapid Resolution
Following the public circulation of the video, local administrative officials clarified the timeline of the suspension and confirmed that the paperwork has since been resolved. Mainpat Janpad Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Khushboo Shastri stated on Sunday that a banking correspondent had regularly visited the household until the administrative block took effect. "In January, the pension was delivered at her home for the last time. The service was stopped over the past four months due to pending KYC formalities,” Shastri said.
Shastri noted that Sukhmaniya arrived at the bank branch on May 22 with her mother-in-law without prior administrative notification. Once inside, bank staff expedited the missing KYC updates and immediately released the accumulated arrears of INR 2,000 covering the four-month backlog. Restoration of Doorstep Banking Services
To prevent a recurrence of the situation, local officials have pledged to restore the home-delivery mechanism for the family moving forward. According to Shastri, the Central Bank of India branch in Mainpat utilises seven Bank Mitras specifically tasked with delivering pension funds to the doorsteps of elderly, infirm, or isolated beneficiaries who cannot physically commute to the financial hub. "From next month onwards, Sukhmaniya’s mother-in-law will again receive the pension amount at her home," Shastri added, ensuring that future welfare payments will bypass the need for long-distance foot travel.
