Women lawyers were stopped by women personnel, according to reports. The exact number of lawyers detained, the grounds for their detention and details of their subsequent release were not immediately available.
Why Are Protesters Demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation?
The proposed CJP demonstration at Jantar Mantar centres on allegations of irregularities in the SIR of electoral rolls and concerns regarding Form 6, which eligible citizens use to apply for inclusion in voter lists. Nitin Nabin Accuses INDIA Bloc, CJP of Conspiring to Destabilise India Ahead of Jantar Mantar Protest.
The protesters have demanded Kumar’s resignation over these issues. The allegations are part of the political dispute surrounding the electoral roll revision process and have prompted demonstrations by activists and opposition-linked groups.
Delhi Police had denied permission for the proposed CJP demonstration, citing security concerns and procedural requirements. Authorities also referred to concerns over compliance with protest rules following an earlier demonstration.
Delhi Police Tighten Security Ahead of Jantar Mantar Protest
Security arrangements were intensified across Delhi ahead of the planned demonstration. According to reports, around 25,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across the capital, with surveillance stepped up at sensitive locations, including railway stations, bus terminals and city borders.
Restrictions were also imposed at several Delhi Metro stations, while barricades and additional security personnel were deployed around key areas. Police detained multiple groups attempting to reach the designated protest site.
The lawyers’ detention near the Supreme Court was among several such actions taken on Saturday as authorities sought to prevent protesters from assembling at Jantar Mantar without permission.
CJP Leaders Also Detained in Delhi
The security action extended to CJP leadership. The party claimed that its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, along with leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were detained by Delhi Police from inside an aircraft shortly after it landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The detentions took place ahead of the party’s planned demonstration against Kumar. The developments added to tensions surrounding the protest, which has drawn participation and support from various activists and student organisations.
The situation in Delhi remained tense on Saturday as police continued monitoring the movement of protesters and enforcing security restrictions around the planned demonstration.
