Delhi: 31-Year-Old IIT Delhi MSc Student Dies After Fall From Sixth Floor

A 31-year-old postgraduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi died on Saturday morning after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of a building on the institute's Hauz Khas campus. Police were notified of the incident shortly after 8:30 a.m. and have initiated an enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.

A 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi died on Saturday morning after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of a building on the institute’s campus, police said. The incident was reported at around 8:33 a.m., following which the student was taken to the IIT Delhi campus hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, TOI reported.

Student Entered Campus Around 8 a.m.

Police said he allegedly jumped from the front side of the building towards the Lecture Hall Complex. The exact circumstances leading to the incident are being investigated. The deceased was identified as a second-year M.Sc. Physics student and a resident of Bihar, according to reports.

No Suicide Note Found

Following the incident, police teams, including crime scene and forensic personnel, inspected the spot and collected evidence. Police said no suicide note was recovered from the scene. A mobile phone found with the student has been seized and is expected to form part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Police Investigate Circumstances

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said the police control room received the call at around 8:33 a.m. on Saturday. The call was transferred to the Kishangarh police station, which has jurisdiction over the IIT Delhi campus.

A police team subsequently reached the campus and shifted the injured student to the institute’s hospital, where he was declared dead. An IIT Delhi official said the institute was aware of the incident and that Delhi Police were investigating the matter.

Previous Incident at IIT Delhi

The incident comes months after another student death on the IIT Delhi campus. In March 2026, a first-year B.Tech student was found dead in an apartment on the institute premises. Police had said at the time that no suicide note was found. The latest case is now under investigation, with police examining evidence and other relevant information to establish what led to the student’s death.
