New Delhi, September 11: Delhi's airspace is facing strict limitations as authorities implement a 300-kilometre restricted zone ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit, barring unscheduled take-offs and landings across regional airports. The security directives take effect from 7:00 AM today, September 11 and will remain in force until 11:00 PM on September 13. India is hosting the high-profile international forum at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12–13, convening heads of state and global delegations.
Airspace Restrictions and Exemptions
Under the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), commercial operations are tightly controlled. Only scheduled airline flights and designated delegate aircraft carrying summit dignitaries - subject to advance clearance - are permitted to operate within the defined radius, reports NDTV Profit. Exemptions from the temporary rules apply to aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force, the Border Security Force, and the Aviation Research Centre, alongside state government aircraft and helicopters carrying a Governor or Chief Minister. Regular scheduled flights and overflights continue to transit the 300-kilometre zone under specified operational parameters.
To manage approach corridors, the NOTAM specifies precise altitude requirements: climbing aircraft must attain 2,900 feet at a 200-kilometre distance from Delhi, while descending flights must maintain flight level FL290 until reaching the same 200-kilometre threshold. Additionally, Safdarjung Airport is closed to civilian traffic for the duration of the event, serving defence forces exclusively.
