A 30-year-old dance teacher in southeast Delhi was rescued from the Yamuna River after jumping into the water due to severe financial distress caused by his inability to pay monthly instalments on an iPhone. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM on Friday, August 21, near Bhola Ghat in the Kalindi Kunj area. Local law enforcement personnel on routine patrol were alerted by bystanders that a man had jumped into the river.
Swift Response and Rescue Operation
Upon receiving the alert, a police team rushed to the location and immediately coordinated with the flood control department, reports PTI. A rescue team equipped with a boat was deployed to the scene. The individual, identified as Deepak Kumar, a resident of Sanjay Colony in Okhla Phase-2, was spotted in the water and successfully brought to safety. Financial Pressures and Police Counselling
During subsequent questioning at the police station, Kumar explained that his earnings had declined significantly over the preceding months. The drop in income left him struggling to clear the monthly equated monthly instalments (EMIs) for his smartphone, resulting in intense mental stress.
Following the rescue, local authorities provided counselling to Kumar and contacted his family members, including his wife and brother-in-law, before safely releasing him to go home.
