Delhi, August 25: In a shocking incident, a major hospital in Delhi had held hostage a 48-year-old man for five days for unpaid bills. The incident took place following a surgery performed on Mohammed Umar. According to The Times of India report, Umar's family had made it clear that they cannot afford the surgery but the Apollo Spectra Hospital in Kailash Colony insisted that they will get approval from his insurance company. However, post-surgery, the hospital said that the insurance company has declined to reimburse the amount, The Times of India reported. Following this, the hospital refused to let him go till he clears all the unpaid bills. According to the Delhi High Court's order in 2017, no patient can be held hostage over non-payment.
On August 11, Umar, a security guard, had undergone 'bladder neck incision' and was to be discharged on the next day. However, he was held 'medical hostage' till August 16 until his insurance company approved the payment.
