New Delhi, July 25: Residents in the national capital woke up to a cloudy morning on Thursday, with scanty rainfall in some areas. After a weeklong lull, monsoon is set to revive force in Delhi- NCR region in the next 24 hours. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi and its neighbouring areas will have to brace for a heavy downpour on Thursday and Friday. While issuing a red alert, the weather agency said this is going to be one of the heaviest spells of the monsoon season so far in the national capital. "Generally cloudy sky with moderate rain and thunderstorms with isolated heavy to very heavy rain," the IMD said. Cloudy sky and moderate rain on Thursday has led to a significant decrease in temperatures and humidity levels. The monsoon surge in Delhi will continue till July 26. "Thereafter on July 27, the rain activities to decrease but isolated pockets of Delhi and NCR will continue with rain and thundershower activities. On and off light rains may continue until the end of July", Skymet said. 

The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 37 and 28 degrees Celsius. According to reports, the MeT office has issued colour-coded warnings to inform people ahead of the torrential rainfall which is believed to cause 'damage, widespread disruption or danger to life', the weather agency said.

From July 1 to July 23, Delhi has recorded 156.5 mm rains, which is four per cent more than the 30-year average of 149.8 mm. On June 22, the national capital received 50.2 mm rainfall, the heaviest in the monsoon season this year. According to a data by IMD, Delhi has received 167.7 mm precipitation against the long-term average of 215.3 mm since June 1, when the monsoon season starts, which is a deficiency of 22 per cent.

Apart from Delhi-NCR region, the IMD has also predicted widespread rain or thundershowers over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh from July 24 to 27.
