Authorities at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital are facing calls for an investigation after a 42-year-old patient died on Sunday, July 19, shortly after a ceiling fan fell on him in the ward where he was receiving treatment. While the patient’s family alleges negligence, hospital officials maintain that the death was caused by an existing medical condition rather than the incident. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 PM on Saturday in Ward 27. According to eyewitnesses and patient attendants, a ceiling fan detached from its mount and fell onto the bed of the patient, identified as Akbar. He passed away on Sunday afternoon.
Conflicting Accounts of the Incident
Witnesses have challenged the hospital’s official narrative. Aslam Qureshi, an advocate who was present in the ward, stated, "I had gone to the ward to meet my brother when I saw the ceiling fan fall on a patient. In an official statement, GTB Hospital clarified that the fan fell due to a "fractured" shaft - a development it described as "highly unusual" and unexpected under normal conditions. Following the incident, the Public Works Department (PWD) maintenance team secured the area and replaced the damaged unit. Regarding the patient’s medical status, the hospital stated that he had been admitted in an unconscious state suffering from "uncontrolled hypertension, stroke or encephalopathy complicated by aspiration pneumonia with respiratory failure." "The patient was immediately assessed clinically following the incident and thoroughly examined to evaluate any injury caused by the impact of the falling fan," the statement read. "No signs of external injury were present. The cause of death of the patient has been his existing medical condition and not related to the incident," the hospital added.
