A large section of land caved in at Chhatabad in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district on Friday, burying more than a dozen houses and damaging several others. Around 12 people were injured in the incident and taken to hospital for treatment, according to reports. The sudden subsidence in the Katras area triggered panic among residents as the ground split open at several locations. A two-storey house was completely swallowed by the collapsing ground, while other homes developed major cracks and suffered structural damage.

Residents Launch Rescue Efforts After Land Subsidence in Dhanbad

Several people were inside their homes when the land began to sink. Local residents immediately joined rescue efforts and helped evacuate people trapped inside the affected houses. Around a dozen people sustained injuries and were subsequently shifted to a hospital for medical treatment. There were no immediate reports of fatalities in the latest account. The affected area was later cordoned off as officials assessed the extent of the damage and monitored the stability of the surrounding ground. Land Subsidence in Dhanbad: House Collapses With Huge Explosion Due To Land Subsidence in Jharkhand, Earth Cracks at Several Places.

Police, administration and BCCL teams reach site

Police, district administration officials and representatives of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) reached Chhatabad after receiving information about the incident. Rescue and relief operations were initiated, while officials continued to monitor the affected zone to prevent further risk to residents. The incident also led to protests by local residents, who expressed anger over what they described as a long-standing land-subsidence risk in the area.

Residents raise safety and rehabilitation concerns

Residents alleged that the locality had remained vulnerable to land subsidence for a considerable period but claimed that adequate preventive measures had not been taken. They also raised concerns over safety and rehabilitation, particularly for families living in areas considered vulnerable to ground movement.

The allegations by residents have not, however, been independently established, and authorities have not yet announced a final assessment of what caused Friday's subsidence.

Dhanbad's Recurring Subsidence Problem

Dhanbad is one of India's major coal-producing regions, and parts of the district have faced recurring concerns over unstable ground linked to its mining history. The latest incident comes days after another land-subsidence episode was reported in the Katras area, where residents had raised concerns about ground instability and demanded rehabilitation and compensation.

Authorities will now have to assess the affected houses, determine the extent of the subsidence and establish whether residents in nearby areas face further danger. For now, rescue and relief teams remain focused on securing the affected locality and ensuring that residents are moved away from potentially unstable ground.
