Why Was Dhruv Rathee Detained?
Rathee was detained from his residence in Sector 56, Gurugram, on Saturday morning as he was reportedly preparing to join the CJP demonstration in Delhi. Police had denied permission for the protest, citing security concerns and procedural requirements.
The CJP had called for a demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The allegations concern the voter-list revision process and have become a major point of contention. Police Warn of Further Action if Rathee Visits Jantar Mantar
Although Rathee was released late on Saturday night, a police source indicated that further action remained possible if he attempted to reach Jantar Mantar despite prohibitory orders. “He can be detained again, or further legal action might be taken if he tries to go to Jantar Mantar despite prohibitory orders,” the source said, according to The New Indian Express.
CJP Protest Triggers Widespread Detentions in Delhi
Rathee’s detention came amid a major security operation across the national capital to prevent protesters from assembling at Jantar Mantar. Police sources said more than 7,000 people were detained at multiple locations during the crackdown on Saturday. Several opposition leaders, including Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal and former chief ministers Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, were also detained while attempting to join the protest.

CJP Calls for Fresh Protest on Sunday
The CJP has renewed its call for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on Sunday, October 11, as it continues to press for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Police security arrangements remain a key factor as authorities seek to prevent unauthorised gatherings in central Delhi. The latest developments follow Saturday’s detentions, which prevented several activists, political leaders and supporters from reaching the planned protest site.
