New Delhi, April 1: A series of medium intensity earthquakes struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Monday. In a span of two hours, the region witnessed nine earthquakes with a magnitude ranging from 4.7 to 5.2, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). However, no loss of life or property was reported.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands witnessed the first quake, measuring 4.9 on the Ritcher Scale, at 5:14 AM, the NCS said. This was by another jolt with a magnitude of 5 a couple of minutes later. The last jolt was recorded at 6.54 AM with a magnitude of 5.2, it stated. The Andaman and the Nicobar archipelago is prone to earthquakes. Tremors Cause Panic in Palghar, 2-yr-old Dies After Falling.

The islands often witness more than two-three quakes a day. On March 23, an earthquake of 5.1 magnitudes hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the epicentre of the earthquake was almost 129 km from Mayabunder, a town in the northern part of the Andaman and Nicobar island.

A similar situation was witnessed in Maharashtra's Palghar in February. Residents of Palghar experienced mild tremors thrice in a day on February 20. However, there were no reports of any casualty or damage to property. Palghar district has witnessed over 45 earthquakes since November last year.
