New Delhi, October 31: In a major good news for the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, India is ranked 77th in the 'Ease of Doing Business' index 2019, released by the World Bank. India jumped 23 places from 100 place among 190 nations in the last year's World Bank's 'Ease of Doing Business' index. Notably, under four years of Modi government, India recorded a jump of 65 position in the 'Ease of Doing Business' index.

"This year’s top 10 improvers, based on reforms undertaken, are Afghanistan, Djibouti, China, Azerbaijan, India, Togo, Kenya, Côte d'Ivoire, Turkey and Rwanda. India’s ranking for cross-border trade improved by 66 places to 80. India was ranked 100th last year and 130th in 2016 and 2015. It was ranked 142 in 2014. "India made starting a business easier by considerably reducing the registration fees, but also made it more difficult by introducing a requirement to file a declaration before the commencement of business operations. These changes apply to both Delhi and Mumbai. India eased business start-up by establishing an online VAT registration system and replacing the physical stamp previously required with an online version," the report concluded.

Reacting to the report, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the government is very close to meet its target of coming within 50 ranks. "When we came to power the PM had said that we have to come within the top 50 ranks. Today, we are at Rank 77. DIPP has worked on how to up the ranking on each criterion. You have to crack the code and try and improve on the criterion in which we lack," he said. Ease of Doing Business Rankings Released: Andhra Pradesh Bags First Position, List of States & Their Rank.

"With all uniform construction bye-laws, from 184 in 2014 ranking we have jumped up by 129 points to 52. This is the largest single jump. It was a big corruption issue. But there has been a record improvement in ranking," he added.
