Eating Out in Mumbai To Get Costlier? Restaurants May Raise Menu Prices by 10-15%
Eating out in Mumbai may soon become more expensive, with restaurants across the city likely to increase menu prices by 10% to 15% from next week. The Indian Hotel & Restaurant Association (AHAR) announced the proposed hike on Wednesday, citing rising costs of cooking gas, food ingredients, rent, labour and transportation.
Mumbai, October 17: Eating out in Mumbai may soon become more expensive, with restaurants across the city likely to increase menu prices by 10% to 15% from next week. The Indian Hotel & Restaurant Association (AHAR) announced the proposed hike on Wednesday, citing rising costs of cooking gas, food ingredients, rent, labour and transportation.
AHAR President Vijay Shetty said the price revision would depend on individual establishments and their operating expenses. According to Shetty, the increase could amount to at least INR 10 on commonly ordered items such as idli, dosa and dal-rice meals.
How Much More Will Idli, Dosa and Dal-Rice Cost?
Online menus of Mumbai restaurants indicate how the proposed increase could affect everyday meals. Udupi Cafe in Powai lists idli at INR 80, sada dosa at INR 90 and dal khichdi at INR 120. If prices rise by 10% to 15%, idli could cost INR 88 to INR 92, while sada dosa could be priced between INR 99 and INR 104. At Udupi 2 Mumbai's Dadar East outlet, steamed idli is listed at INR 120, sada dosa at INR 130 and masala dosa at INR 165. A 10%-15% increase would take the masala dosa price to approximately INR 182 to INR 190.
These calculations are illustrative. Actual prices will depend on whether individual restaurants implement the proposed revision and the extent of the increase.
Monthly Food Expenses May Increase
The price revision could affect office-goers, students and workers who regularly depend on neighbourhood eateries for breakfast and lunch.
For someone spending INR 150 daily on meals outside the home, a 10%-15% increase would raise the daily expense to INR 165-INR 172.50. Over 26 working days, this could add INR 390 to INR 585 to the monthly food budget. Two working adults with similar spending habits could face an additional monthly expense of INR 780 to INR 1,170.
Why Are Mumbai Restaurants Increasing Prices?
Shetty said restaurants had absorbed rising operating expenses for as long as possible but were now finding it difficult to maintain existing prices. Higher commercial gas costs, vegetables, pulses, dairy products, edible oils, transportation, rentals and staff wages have added to the pressure.
AHAR represents more than 25,000 member restaurants and bars. However, the proposed increase is not a mandatory, uniform hike across every establishment. Restaurants will decide their prices individually.
What Customers Should Know
The announcement does not mean all Mumbai restaurants have already increased their prices. Customers should check updated menus at their regular eateries before assuming a price revision has taken effect.
For diners who depend on affordable daily meals, even a modest increase could add up over a month, while restaurants face the challenge of balancing rising expenses with customers' budgets.
