Khardah Police on Monday arrested Tirthankar Ghosh, the son of former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nirmal Ghosh, from the Dakshineswar area in connection with multiple criminal allegations, including cheating, assault, and extortion. The arrest triggered chaotic scenes outside the Khardah police station. As police personnel escorted Ghosh to a vehicle to produce him before the Barrackpore Sub-Divisional Court, an agitated crowd of local residents and opposition workers threw eggs at him. Slogans of "chor, chor" (thief, thief) were raised as the vehicle departed for the court.

According to police sources, Tirthankar Ghosh-a former Panihati municipality councillor who unsuccessfully contested the recent state assembly elections-had been avoiding law enforcement for several days. The criminal cases against him involve severe charges, including criminal intimidation, attempted murder, and the illegal display of firearms. One primary complaint stems from a November 2024 incident where Ghosh and his associates allegedly used physical violence to forcefully snatch a winning lottery ticket worth ₹1 crore from a local resident. He is also being investigated for his alleged involvement in post-poll violence.

The legal troubles have simultaneously intensified for his father, former Panihati legislator Nirmal Ghosh, who faces separate complaints of extortion and corruption. Following his son’s late-night detention, the senior Ghosh approached the Calcutta High Court on Monday seeking legal protection against coercive action by law enforcement.
