A 46-year-old laundry businessman from Pune faked an immigration issue to his wife after an international trip with a female friend was cancelled at Mumbai International Airport due to a passport issue. The man had informed his family that he was flying to Kuala Lumpur for work, but his plans fell apart when immigration officials detected that his companion was carrying an old passport she had previously reported as lost.
Fearing that impending legal complications would expose his personal travel plans to his wife, the businessman called off the flight, switched off his mobile phone, and left the airport, Times of India reported. His disappearance and fabricated claims led his worried wife to approach the police, resulting in an abduction and kidnapping FIR being registered at Sahar police station. Detailing the sequence of events at the terminal, investigators said the man attempted to cover up the disruption before leaving the premises. "After his woman friend was stopped by the immigration department, the businessman cancelled his journey, switched off his mobile phone, and went to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Central Railway's main station in south Mumbai, with her," the Sahar police station official said.
However, before leaving for the railway station, he called his wife from a landline at the airport to inform her that he had to surrender his mobile phone due to an immigration issue, the official said. The next day at around 3:35 pm, he made a brief WhatsApp video call reiterating that the issue would soon be resolved before his phone went unreachable again. Kidnapping FIR and Confession at Police Station
Unable to reach him or verify his whereabouts through friends, the man's wife lodged a complaint, prompting Sahar police to register a case of abduction and kidnapping.
Later that night, the businessman learned about the kidnapping FIR and turned himself in at Sahar police station, which holds jurisdiction over the international airport. During questioning, he confessed to fabricating the entire narrative about the immigration snag to hide the fact that he was travelling with another woman.
With the circumstances verified as a personal misdirection rather than a criminal abduction, authorities confirmed they would conclude the formal case in court. "We will file a 'C Summary' closure report in court. It is a classification used when a case is registered under a genuine mistake of fact or found to be neither entirely true nor false within two weeks," the official explained.
