Mumbai, August 6: A 31-year-old man was allegedly honey-trapped, stripped, filmed naked and extorted of INR 30,000 after being lured through the LGBTQ+ dating app Grindr in Mumbai's Govandi area. The incident has once again raised concerns over the growing number of s*xtortion and honey-trap cases linked to dating applications. Police have booked four accused and are probing whether the suspects were involved in similar crimes targeting app users.

Victim Lured Through Grindr to Govandi

According to the FIR, the victim downloaded Grindr on July 30 and started chatting with a person who later shared a WhatsApp number and asked him to meet near Karbala Masjid in Gautam Nagar, Govandi. He reached the location around 8:30 pm, where a man introduced himself using a fake name and took him to a room near a Buddha Vihar.

Police said three more men entered the room shortly afterwards and surrounded the victim.

Stripped, Filmed and Allegedly Extorted

Investigators said the accused allegedly forced the man to remove his clothes and recorded a nude video on their mobile phones. They then threatened to circulate the video online unless he paid them money. Grindr Date Ends in Extortion Plot Over Nude Video Threat in Mumbai, Man Loses INR 30,000.

To intensify the pressure, the accused allegedly showed the victim another nude video purportedly featuring a person known to him, reported Times Now.

Police said the gang threatened him with a knife and an iron rod and demanded INR 30,000. When he said he did not have cash, they allegedly snatched his mobile phone, obtained his Google Pay password and transferred INR 30,000 from his account. According to investigators, INR 20,000 was transferred to one accused and INR 10,000 to another. Grindr Dating App Scam: 4 Arrested for Blackmailing and Extorting Money Through G*y Dating App in Noida (Watch Videos).

Before letting him leave, the accused allegedly warned him that they would falsely implicate him in a narcotics case if he approached the police.

FIR Registered After Victim Approaches Police

The complainant remained silent for several days due to trauma before discussing the incident with friends and approaching the police. Based on his statement, Deonar Police registered an FIR on August 4 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.

The accused have been identified as Wahid, Salman, Saif and Tabrez, all residents of Govandi. No arrests had been made at the time of filing this report.

Police Probe Possible S*xtortion Racket

Police are investigating whether the four accused are part of a larger sextortion gang operating through fake dating app profiles. The case follows a similar incident investigated by Powai Police earlier this year, where a man was allegedly lured through Grindr, blackmailed with a nude video and forced to transfer money.

Investigators have noted an increase in honey-trap and s*xtortion cases involving dating and social networking apps, with criminal groups allegedly using fake identities to target unsuspecting users.
