Gujarat: Teacher Suspended, Arrested in Gir Somnath for Sending Student To Buy Liquor
A primary school teacher in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district has been suspended and arrested for allegedly sending a Class 7 student to buy liquor during school hours. The accused, Hareshgiri Gulabgiri Goswami, was booked after the school principal filed a complaint. The state government has also formed a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the incident.
A primary school teacher in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district has been suspended and arrested for allegedly sending a Class 7 student to purchase liquor during school hours. The incident, reported from Khapat village in Una taluka, prompted immediate administrative and police action, with the state government also constituting a three-member inquiry committee.
According to police, the incident took place on June 20 at around 8 am. Gujarat, where the manufacture, sale and consumption of liquor are prohibited, has taken the matter seriously, with authorities initiating both departmental and criminal proceedings against the accused teacher.
Primary, Secondary and Adult Education Minister Pradyuman Vaja said the government acted swiftly after the incident came to light. In a video message, the minister said: "An incident was reported in Khapat in Una of Gir Somnath district, where a teacher sent a student to purchase liquor."
He added: "Treating the matter with utmost seriousness, I directed immediate suspension of the concerned teacher, following which the District Development Officer suspended him without delay."
The accused has been identified as Hareshgiri Gulabgiri Goswami, who taught students of Classes 6 to 8 at Khapat Primary School. According to the minister, the school principal lodged a complaint on Friday, following which Una police registered an FIR and arrested the teacher.
As per the FIR, Goswami allegedly offered a Class 7 student INR 20 and handed him INRΒ 500 to buy a bottle of liquor. The school principal later informed the taluka primary education officer about the alleged incident.
The Gujarat government has constituted a three-member committee to investigate the matter.
According to an official release, the panel comprises:
- The Deputy District Development Officer of Gir Somnath
- The Taluka Primary Education Officer of Veraval
- The Taluka Development Officer of Gir Gadhada
The committee will examine the circumstances surrounding the allegations and submit its findings.
Police said the teacher remains under investigation, while the departmental inquiry is being conducted separately. The case centres on allegations that the teacher sent a student to buy liquor during school hours, resulting in his suspension, arrest and the formation of an official inquiry committee.
