A brief commotion broke out outside a NEET-UG re-examination centre in Ahmedabad’s Vastrapur area on Sunday, June 21, 2026, after a dispute arose regarding the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) security frisking protocols. The tension escalated when some parents and political groups objected to the removal of religious symbols during candidate screening, drawing quick intervention from local police to restore order. The incident occurred at the R.J. Tibrewal Commerce College, one of the designated centres hosting the nationwide medical entrance re-test. According to law enforcement officials, the confrontation stemmed from a misunderstanding of the NTA's prescribed dress code rules.

Trouble began when exam centre staff requested candidates to remove specific accessories—including 'kanthi' (Hindu sacred threads)—as part of the mandatory pre-entry screening. Some parents raised objections upon noticing that female candidates wearing hijabs were permitted inside after standard security checks, alleging an inconsistent application of the guidelines. As the dispute grew, members of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and a local Hindu organization gathered outside the venue, leading to brief arguments and a minor scuffle. Additional police personnel, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Jayesh Brahmbhatt, quickly arrived at the scene to defuse the situation.

"The issue arose due to confusion regarding the NTA dress code rules," ACP Brahmbhatt stated. He clarified that two individuals associated with a Hindu organization were brought to the local police station for creating a disturbance near the venue, but they were neither detained nor arrested and were later released after the rules were explained to them.

Police and examination authorities explained the official NTA guidelines directly to the gathering, noting that candidates are permitted to wear religious or customary attire provided they report to the centre early for thorough, separate security screening. ‘ It Should Have Been Handled in a Positive Manner’

The NTA is conducting the NEET-UG 2026 re-test nationwide following the cancellation of the initial May 3 examination, which is currently under investigation due to a question paper leak. In Ahmedabad alone, approximately 10,445 candidates appeared for the re-test across 23 different examination centres, with the test concluding successfully without further disruption.
