The Indian National Congress has condemned reported police action and the filing of FIRs against students involved in recent protests against the NEET-UG paper leak, stating that these steps contradict earlier government assurances. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, July 27, the party said it "unequivocally condemns all the attacks on students". It noted that the Modi government had promised during negotiations that no student would be picked up and that there would be no police action against them. The Congress added that FIRs have nonetheless been registered against students in Patna, West Bengal and Bihar.

The party’s message to students was clear: "We - IYC, NSUI, and the Indian National Congress, are with you. You are not alone, and you will not be left alone". What Gurmehar Kaur Said?

Addressing the press conference, Gurmehar Kaur spoke about FIRs being filed against students in Patna, Bihar and West Bengal. "We are there with you. Everybody is there with you," she said. Kaur further asked students who have been served legal notice, detained, asked to appear for questioning or had any of their social media posts taken down or who need legal support in any situation, to contact the CKG Legal SOS at 9811867474. "To all the students, you are not alone. And you will not be left alone." Kaur stated.

Context of the Student Protests

The remarks come amid nationwide student demonstrations triggered by the alleged paper leak in the NEET-UG medical entrance examination.
