A two-storey makeshift house collapsed during heavy rain in Dabra in Gwalior district on Wednesday night, September 2, trapping five members of a family under the debris. Two people died in the incident, while three others were injured and are undergoing treatment in hospital.
The incident took place in the Jangipura area at around 11.30 pm. Neighbours who heard the sound of the collapse rushed to the spot and alerted police. Two Family Members Die
Two-year-old Aditya Rajak alias Gunu died while being taken to the hospital. His mother, Seema, later died during treatment. Seema's husband, Jagendra Rajak, 38, and their daughters Vaishali, 5, and Ragni, 8, were injured in the collapse. They are undergoing treatment in Gwalior. The five family members had been inside the house when it collapsed.
After hearing the collapse, neighbours rushed to the Jangipura area and alerted the police. Police personnel and local residents then worked together to remove the debris and rescue the family members trapped underneath. The injured were initially taken to Dabra Civil Hospital before Jagendra and his daughters were taken to Gwalior for further treatment. According to information about the family, Jagendra Rajak is the head of the household and works at a shoe factory in Gwalior. He reportedly travels to work by train every day. Seema worked as a domestic helper, doing sweeping and mopping jobs. The financially disadvantaged family had been living in the dilapidated house before the collapse.
Jagendra's brother Raghavendra Rajak said the two brothers lived nearby. Jagendra's other two daughters, Nancy and Gauri, were staying at their uncle's house when the roof collapsed. They therefore escaped the incident unharmed.
The collapse occurred during heavy rain on Wednesday night, although further details about the condition of the structure and the precise cause of the collapse were not provided. The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of families living in dilapidated or makeshift structures during periods of heavy rainfall. The three surviving members of the family remain under treatment in Gwalior.
