Mumbai is on high alert today, July 4, as a combination of extremely heavy monsoon rainfall and a significant high tide threatens to inundate low-lying areas. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintaining a "red alert" for the financial capital, civic authorities have issued a stark warning for residents to avoid the coastline during a major tidal surge scheduled for this afternoon.

High Tide Warning for July 4

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has alerted citizens to a high tide measuring 4.26 metres expected at 2:50 PM today. The civic body also said that there would be a low tide of 1.66 metres at 8:56 PM on July 4. Officials are particularly concerned that the peak tidal height, coinciding with ongoing heavy downpours, may significantly elevate the risk of waterlogging and coastal flooding in prone areas. Residents have been strongly advised to stay away from the coastline and exercise extreme caution when travelling through low-lying zones during this window. Mumbai Rains: Tree Collapses at Meenatai Thackeray Flower Market in Dadar After Heavy Rainfall (Watch Videos).

Intense Monsoon Outlook for Mumbai

Mumbai and its suburbs have been experiencing a relentless monsoon spell, with several pockets logging over 100 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. Data from the BMC for the period between 8:00 AM on July 3 and 8:00 AM on July 4 highlights significant precipitation, with the western suburbs, particularly Bandra, recording the highest rainfall at 150.6 mm. The IMD’s red alert remains in effect as the city braces for further "heavy to very heavy rainfall", with isolated areas likely to see "extremely heavy showers" and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph. This active monsoon phase is expected to persist, with the red alert extending through July 5 for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar. The intensity of rainfall is forecast to ease slightly by July 6, with further moderation expected by July 7.

Reservoir Levels Shared by BMC

Despite the heavy downpour, the city’s primary water sources remain below optimal capacity. The latest report from the BMC, recorded at 6:00 AM on July 4, indicates that the seven reservoirs supplying Mumbai currently hold 136,137 million litres of water. This represents approximately 9.41 per cent of their total storage capacity of 1,447,363 million litres. While current levels are an improvement over last year's figures, officials continue to monitor the stocks closely as the monsoon season advances. Mumbai Weather Forecast and Update: IMD Issues Red Alert for City, Thane and Palghar Till July 5.

Public Safety Measures

In response to the extreme weather forecast, authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant. While public transport services, including the suburban local train network, remain operational despite reported delays, the state administration has advised residents to carry umbrellas and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency helplines have been activated across the region to assist with any flood-related incidents or monsoon-related emergencies.
