After becoming separated from the pilgrimage group, Chaman Lal made his way towards Amritsar railway station. According to his family, he eventually boarded a train heading towards Bihar and travelled to Gaya. By the time he was noticed there, he was distressed and hungry and had difficulty explaining who he was or where he lived.

The only detail he could provide was the name of his village: Fatehgarh Gujran. Back in Punjab, his family had already begun searching for him. His grandson, Sukhchain Singh, travelled to Amritsar after learning that Chaman Lal was missing and lodged a complaint with police. Local Resident Recognises Missing Man

After reaching Machhiwara, Neeraj continued trying to identify Chaman Lal's family. He showed the elderly man's photograph to local residents on Saturday, hoping someone would recognise him.

The effort paid off when Master Krishan Lal, a local resident, recognised Chaman Lal from a missing-person photograph that had been circulated on social media.

Krishan Lal contacted the family, and word quickly reached Sukhchain Singh. The grandson travelled to Machhiwara and confirmed that the elderly man was his grandfather.

Family Thanks Neeraj For Bringing Him Home

The reunion came after the family had spent days searching for Chaman Lal in Amritsar and contacting authorities. “We searched for him in Amritsar but could not find him. I am extremely thankful to Neeraj for keeping my grandfather safe and bringing him back,” Singh said.

The family later welcomed Neeraj into their home. They garlanded him and offered him money and clothes as a gesture of gratitude for helping Chaman Lal and accompanying him back from Bihar.

For the family, the search had begun as an anxious effort to locate a missing elderly relative. It ended after information passed between strangers, local residents, social-media users and family members connected the man in Gaya to his village in Punjab.

Neeraj said he could not ignore Chaman Lal when he saw him alone and in distress near the railway station. “When I saw him alone at the station, I felt I should help him,” he said.

He said that once he learned the village name, finding Chaman Lal's family became something he felt personally responsible for. Neeraj, who works in the construction sector in Gaya, said he has helped people in distress since his school days.

In this case, a single remembered village name became the crucial lead. Combined with online searches and help from people in Machhiwara, it eventually allowed Chaman Lal to return to his family after travelling hundreds of kilometres from where he had originally gone missing.
