India’s thermal power sector is confronting a sudden supply strain as central data shows dozens of coal-fired generating stations operating with critically low fuel inventories. According to the latest figures from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), 58 thermal power stations nationwide have been categorized as holding critical coal stocks-defined as inventory levels falling below 25% of their prescribed operational requirements. Kishan Reddy sought to allay public concerns regarding potential power outages, emphasizing that the country holds adequate total reserves. National coal availability—including stockpiles at mine pitheads, power plant yards, and transit systems—stands at approximately 123 million tonnes, which is sufficient to cover 51 days of national consumption, according to government statements. State-owned Coal India Limited continues to hold over 70 million tonnes at pitheads alone, indicating that the primary challenge is transport and logistics rather than absolute resource availability.

Emergency Transport and Capacity Management Measures

To bridge the gap between mines and generation stations, the Ministry of Coal and Indian Railways have initiated emergency supply adjustments.
