New Delhi, Sept 7: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Thursday unveiled the space suit and crew model for the Gaganyaan Mission of 2022, which would feature the Indian astronauts being sent into the space.

The orange suit, which is enabled to carry a gas cylinder carrying a litre of oxygen, was unveiled at the launch of the sixth edition of Bengaluru Space Expo. The suit has been developed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, based in Thiruvananthapuram.

Two orange suits have been procured by the ISRO, whereas, a third would be availed in the coming days. The agency plans to send three Indian astronauts into the space as part of the Gaganyaan Mission 2022.

Since the suits are enabled to hold one oxygen cylinder, it would allow the astronauts to breath for 60 minutes while suspension in the space.

ISRO also displayed the crew and the escape crew model which would be used by the agency for the ambitious mission. The prototype of the crew model has already been tested.

The capsule-shaped crew model would be used by ISRO to send the three astronauts into the space, at an orbit located 400-km away from the earth's surface.

The astronauts will stay in the space for five to seven days. The space agency predicts that they would reach the designated orbit in around 16 minutes, whereas, they would return to the earth in 36 minutes. The escape crew model would land back in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Gujarat.

ISRO would be taking advice from French space agency CNES to successfully execute the project. The Paris-based counterpart of ISRO would be extending their expertise in  the fields of space medicine, astronaut health monitoring, and radiation protection, among other related areas.
