New Delhi, December 17: A day after the Executive Committee of Jamia Millia Islamia issued a statement calling for judicial inquiry into the alleged police brutalities inside the campus, officials of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) said no request for inquiry has been received from the University's top brass. The contradiction from the MHRD sources comes a day after the varsity's Vice Chancellor, Najma Akhter, called for a court-monitored investigation into the assault allegedly perpetrated on the students by police personnel. Jamia Crackdown Aftermath: Several Delhi Police Officers Transferred by L-G Anil Baijal, Check Full List.

"MHRD received a report on Monday night from Jamia Millia Islamia on Dec 15 incident. Report mentioned that a resolution has been passed by Executive Committee of university seeking high level/judicial inquiry. But we have not received any formal request for inquiry," top Ministry sources told news agency ANI. Amit Shah Appeals to Students to 'Understand' CAA, Accuses Congress, AAP and TMC of Stoking Unrest.

The police crackdown in Jamia was reported on Sunday night, after students staged a protest against the citizenship law in South Delhi. A section of miscreants, who had infiltrated among the protesters, set four DTC buses on fire and vandalised several other vehicles.

In retaliation, the riot control squad of the Delhi Police barged into the Jamia campus and launched a crackdown against the varsity students. Unverified clips which went viral on social media showed the police personnel vandalising library and attacking the students inside classrooms.

Even as the University's Vice Chancellor has called for an inquiry, questions have been raised over her role in the row. Prominent among her critics is Hyderabad lawmaker Asaduddin Owaisi. "She did not act in manner to protect the students. She is a stooge of the RSS and was appointed as Jamia V-C with the blessings of Indresh Kumar (head of RSS' Muslim Rashtriya Manch)," he said, adding that it might had not been possible for the police to enter Jamia campus without the V-C's knowledge.
