What Happened in Jamui?
According to police, the incident took place on the evening of September 19 near Mawara Hill in Jamui. The two Class 10 students were reportedly returning from the area on a two-wheeler when they were intercepted by a group of people. A video of the alleged harassment later circulated widely on social media, prompting public and political reactions. Police registered an FIR and formed a Special Investigation Team to identify and arrest those allegedly involved.
Police said several suspects had been identified from the video. Three people were initially arrested, while further arrests were being pursued as the investigation continued.
Addressing reporters in Patna on Tuesday, Tejashwi Yadav called for Samrat Choudhary to resign over the incident. Yadav alleged that the episode reflected a deterioration in law and order in Bihar and questioned the safety of women and girls in the state. He also criticised ruling-party leaders for comments describing the incident as an isolated or minor episode. The RJD leader had also criticised the state government a day earlier, alleging that authorities were initially attempting to suppress the matter. These allegations are political claims and have not been independently established.
The controversy has also drawn responses from leaders of the ruling NDA. JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha described the incident as an “isolated” or “minor” incident while defending the government's law-and-order record. His remarks drew criticism from opposition parties.
Senior JD(U) minister Shrawan Kumar said strict action would be taken against those found guilty. Jamui MLA and minister Shreyasi Singh also condemned the incident and said the administration had acted after the video came to light.
The police investigation is continuing, with authorities examining the video and other available evidence to identify the remaining suspects. According to police, the case has been registered under relevant provisions, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Authorities have also taken action against social media accounts involved in circulating material that could identify the minors. A subsequent police operation also resulted in the arrest of the alleged prime accused, according to reports, with the suspect being injured during an encounter and taken for medical treatment.
Opposition Steps Up Attack
The Jamui case has widened into a political confrontation, with opposition parties questioning the government's record on law and order. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut also called for the Bihar government to be dismissed over the incident, while Congress leaders criticised the state government's response.
The Bihar government and ruling alliance leaders have maintained that action is being taken against those responsible. The police investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against the accused will be determined through the legal process.
