Jamui Minor Harassment Case: SIT Formed, 3 Arrested; Action Against 32 Social Media Accounts
Bihar Police have arrested three suspects and constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) following widespread outrage over a viral video showing the harassment and molestation of two minor students in Jamui district.
Three minors have been arrested and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed after two Class 10 students were allegedly harassed and assaulted in Bihar’s Jamui district. The incident, which took place on September 19 near Madwa Pahad, came to light after a video of the episode was circulated widely on social media. Police have identified around seven to eight people allegedly linked to the incident and are conducting raids to trace the remaining suspects, India Today reported.
The case has also prompted action against 32 social media accounts that allegedly circulated footage showing the minors. What Happened in Jamui
According to police, the two Class 10 students, a boy and a girl, had gone to the Madwa Pahad area after attending coaching classes on Saturday evening. While they were returning on a scooter at around 6.25 pm to 6.30 pm, a group allegedly stopped them in a hilly area around three kilometres from the Jamui-Lakhisarai main road.
Police said the students were allegedly abused, forced off their scooter and assaulted. When they attempted to leave, the group allegedly followed them and continued the harassment. The incident was recorded on video by one of the people present. The footage later surfaced on social media, prompting police to take cognisance of the matter. Three Arrested, More Suspects Being Traced
Jamui police registered an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police said three suspects have been arrested so far, while investigators have identified several others allegedly involved in the incident. Two of those arrested are reportedly aged between 17 and 18.
An SIT headed by Jamui Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deepti Monali has been constituted to investigate the case and arrest the remaining suspects. Police are also verifying the criminal antecedents of those identified.
32 Social Media Accounts Flagged
The circulation of the video has become a separate part of the police investigation. According to senior police officer KS Anupam, authorities have identified 13 Facebook accounts, 12 Instagram accounts and seven X accounts for takedown action.
Police have warned that sharing footage that exposes the identity or face of a minor can attract action under the POCSO Act and the Juvenile Justice Act. Authorities are also working with social media platforms to remove the footage from circulation.
Police Say No Initial Complaint Was Filed
Jamui police said the victims had not initially approached the authorities with a complaint. The investigation began after the video emerged online and police traced the students. According to the Jamui SP, investigators used details visible in the video, including a vehicle registration number, to help locate the victims. Their statements were subsequently recorded.
Police are now examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, the involvement of each suspect and the sequence of events captured in the footage.
NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo motu cognisance of the case. NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar sought an FIR, identification and arrest of all those allegedly involved, along with a time-bound and impartial investigation. The commission asked authorities to use the available video evidence to identify the suspects.
The Bihar State Women's Commission has also sought a report from the district administration regarding the incident.
Political Reactions
The incident has also triggered a political debate over women's and girls' safety in Bihar. Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, have criticised the state government and called for action against those responsible. Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav also questioned the government's handling of women's safety issues. The immediate focus of the investigation is on identifying and arresting the remaining suspects, completing the probe and preventing further circulation of footage involving the minors.
